Police said Smiley was among those injured in the shooting at K Street and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. In the preliminary investigation, officials quickly identified Smiley as a person of interest, and police said he “remained under the supervision of an officer at the hospital while his treatment continued.” Following further investigation, Smiley was taken into custody by police detectives on Tuesday. When he managed to leave the hospital, police said he would be held in Sacramento County Main Prison for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun. April 4, noon The Sacramento Police Department said in a press release on Monday afternoon that an arrest had been made in connection with Sunday’s mass shooting that left six dead. Police said an investigation identified 26-year-old Dandrae Martin as a suspect and arrested and detained him on charges of assault and illegal possession of weapons. During the preliminary investigation at the scene of the shooting on K Street, the police said that they located more than 100 shells and located at least three buildings and three vehicles that were hit by bullets. In addition, SWAT teams and detectives issued search warrants at three homes in the area and located at least one pistol. The three women killed were: Johntaya Alexander, 21; Melinda Davis, 57; and Yamile Martinez-Andrade, 21. The three men were identified as Sergio Harris, 38. Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32; and Devazia Turner, 29. Harris was named by the medical examiner on Sunday. April 4, 9:45 a.m. Family and friends were devastated by the deaths of six people who were shot dead in central Sacramento near the Golden 1 Center early Sunday. Twelve people were also injured (at least four with serious injuries) in the shootings that took place at around 2am on the outskirts of the entertainment district, where crowds filled the streets as bars and nightclubs closed. Authorities continued to alert family members of the three men and three women who died. The Sacramento County Medical Examiner’s Office had confirmed the identity of only one of the six dead, 38-year-old Sergio Harris, as of Monday morning. Sergio’s mother, Pamela Harris, told KCRA that her son “was a very lively young man. He enjoys being around, he likes to party, he smiles all the time. Do not disturb people.” Pamela added, “It’s crazy for this to happen. I’m right at this point right now, I do not know what to do. I do not even feel that this is true. I feel that this is a dream.” The Sacramento Bee reported that Sergio was the father of two children. Sacramento police said they were looking for at least two people who opened fire. Police said they found a stolen weapon and are investigating whether it was used in the shooting. Police Chief Kathy Lester revealed a few details from the investigation and asked the public to share videos and other information that could lead to the killers. “The scale of the violence that just happened in our city is unprecedented during my 27 years here,” Lester told reporters at a news conference at police headquarters. “We are shocked and devastated by this tragedy. “But we are also determined as a service to find those responsible and ensure justice for the victims and their families.” The shootings erupted shortly after the clash broke out on a street full of luxury hotels, nightclubs and bars, and police said the department was investigating whether the altercation was linked to the shooting. A video of witnesses posted on social media showed rapid gunshots for at least 45 seconds as people screamed and ran to cover themselves. Sunday’s violence was the third time in the United States this year that at least six people have been killed in mass shootings, according to a database compiled by the Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University. And it was the second mass shooting in Sacramento in five weeks. On Feb. 28, a father killed his three daughters, a attendant and himself at a Sacramento church during a weekly surveillance. David Mora, 39, was armed with a makeshift semi-automatic weapon, although he was under a restrictive measure prohibiting him from possessing a firearm.
