Around 20:30 on Thursday, police went to a green area behind the 100 block of Arbor Meadows Close NW, after receiving reports of an injury. “Upon arrival, the man was found dead,” police said in a press release. After an autopsy on Friday, police released the identity of the victim as 16-year-old Jal Acor Jal, whose age has alarmed police. “This is a shocking record, as the victim is so young,” said the Calgary Homicide Police Unit. Sean Gregson. “We continue to investigate and are interested in hearing from anyone who may know the victim’s movements and who may have been with him (on Thursday) night.” Those who knew Jal described him as a budding model who excelled in football and lived with his grandmother, not far from where his body was found.

“He is from a very good family and he was a very good kid,” said Marsa Edalang. “He played ball and hung out with friends.” Edalang was with two other women examining the site of Jal’s body – a sloping, grassy area sprinkled with poplar along the Stoney Trail popular with dog walkers – so they could place flowers. “All we will do is pray and comfort the family,” Edalang said, adding that she did not know why the teenager would have been killed. Jal was a member of the Sudanese community in the city, which has been plagued by violence and death in recent years. “We are so tired of losing our children in the Sudanese community. I have four boys and that scares me,” he said. A youth advocate in the community said he knew Jal as a budding role model.

“It’s disturbing when we see kids who excel like him and then lose focus,” Gar Gar said. “Every year he comes and we pray we don’t lose another child; his family is just devastated and he can’t believe it happened.” Police say there may be several scenes related to the teenager’s death. Officers would like to hear from residents in the area where his body was found, at Schubert Place NW 200, and Scenic View Close NW 100 and 200, if they noticed any unusual activity between 7 and 9 p.m. . Thursday. They also hope that these residents can check for any suspicious objects and provide video from a security camera or dashboard from these areas. Those who live a few meters away from the spot where Jal’s body was found say they did not notice anything on Thursday night other than a police helicopter hovering persistently over the area.
