The two terrorists who carried out the attack are believed to be supporters of the Islamic State. The shooting came days after a deadly terrorist attack in the southern city of Beersheba, which was also carried out by a man who tried to join the jihadist group, raising concerns about further attacks inspired by the terrorist organization. Meanwhile, officials had warned of an escalation of violence before and during the holy month of Ramadan, which begins later this week. Security camera footage from the scene shows the two gunmen, bearded and wearing white uniforms, opening fire on passers-by and police at a bus stop in the city, near several restaurants. The video showed one of the gunmen repeatedly shooting a victim on the ground before grabbing this person’s rifle. He also opened fire on a man who was seen passing by on a bicycle. Police said several police officers were injured in the attack and during the battle with the terrorists shortly afterwards. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett arrived at the scene, visited the local police station and held talks with Israeli Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai and one of the undercover officers who killed the terrorists. (Flash90) The attack came five days after four people were killed in a terrorist attack in the southern city of Beersheba. The terrorist – who had previously been convicted of attempting to join the Islamic State – was shot by passersby. He was also an Israeli citizen. Israeli security services, particularly the police and Shin Bet, have come under public criticism in recent days for failing to monitor prominent Islamic State supporters following their release. Last weekend, two police officers were injured in a suspected knife attack in the Ras al-Amud district of East Jerusalem, and an Israeli man was stabbed and slightly injured while jogging on Hebron Street in Jerusalem. Earlier this month, several attacks took place in the Old City of Jerusalem and a nearby West Bank city. Tensions have risen between Israel and the Palestinians in recent weeks in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Ten Palestinians have been killed in violent clashes with Israeli troops: some have been killed in fighting with Israeli troops in the West Bank, while others have been killed in attempted attacks. Following Sunday’s attack, the Israeli Defense Forces said they were reinforcing troops in the West Bank and the seam zone, with four additional battalions. The Israeli army said Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi had conducted an assessment of the situation following the deadly attack. Do you appreciate the Times of Israel? If so, we have a request.
