Note: Falcons’ Desmond Ridder, one of the top QBs from this year’s draft class, is scheduled to play against the Jets on Monday night. Stats: 14-23, 128 yards With by far the biggest workload of the QBs here, Mr. Iowa State’s Irrelevant made a quiet bid for the 49ers’ No. 2 spot against the Vikings, alongside an equally effective outing from fellow backup Nate Sudfeld. His numbers weren’t amazing, but would have been better if not for three drops. At the very least, he has proven that he has the accuracy that Kyle Shanahan desires. Stats: 7-11, 83 yards, 1 TD The Colts may not have room for the undrafted Notre Dame product with Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger close behind Matt Ryan, but he showed a touch of upside to close out the game against the Lions, throwing a perfect pass downfield touchdown to Samson Nacua in the final minute of the fourth quarter. Stats: 9-10, 129 yards, 1 TD For the second week in a row, the seventh-rounder is making the case that he belongs on Miami’s roster as the No. 3 QB, behind Tua Tagovalioa and Teddy Bridgewater. Even in a close loss, he looked poised in the pocket, standing up especially for fairly deep hits. On a team whose other QBs are notoriously conservative, this is a nice developmental trait. Stats: 7-17, 80 yards, 1 TD, 42 rushing yards With a lot of electricity and little consistency, Willis posted a stat line that looks a lot like Trey Lance against the Buccaneers, but look where Lance is now: starting at QB for an NFC title contender. In fact, Willis’ preseason was always about confirming the physical gifts that warranted his second-day pick in Tennessee. He needs to develop as a passer to claim and maintain a top spot, but his effortless matchup and arm angle adjustments are evident. Stats: 6-7, 76 yards, 1 TD K-Dawg picked the right time to show some of his best stuff, considering he’s the only QB here capable of actually winning a starting job. His work was very limited against the Jaguars (eight snaps), but he was instrumental in an uptick in scoring that had Mike Tomlin happy after the game. Even better, he stood tall in frenetic pockets, indicating he can handle Pittsburgh’s transition O-line just as well, if not better, than his main competition for the job: Mitchell Trubisky.
Other notables
Matt Corral (Panthers): The third-round pick showed some zip in his passing, but left early after suffering a potential season-ending Lisfranc injury, indefinitely delaying his bid for a backup job in Carolina. Sam Howell (Commanders): While his underarm talent is impressive, Howell wasn’t as efficient as his debut, going 10-for-18 with an interception against the Chiefs on a down day for Washington’s offense. Bailey Zappe (Patriots): The fourth-round pick worked long after Mac Jones against the Panthers, and showed short-area accuracy, but also threw a bad pick-six trying to make a short lateral.
