It happened at about 9:19 am. near Old Weston Road and Rockwell Avenue, just north of St. Clair Avenue West, in the Stockyards area of the city.
Toronto Fire Chief Chris Bertram said emergency crews arrived on scene to find a black SUV had lost control and collided with several vehicles before crashing into a nearby home and its gas meter.
The scene of a multi-vehicle crash in Toronto’s Stockyards area is seen in this Aug. 21, 2022, image. A gas leak was confirmed in the area and more than a dozen people were evacuated as a result, according to Bertram, who described the leak as “excessive.” Witnesses who spoke to CP24 at the scene said they heard a distinct hissing sound after the leak. The gas has since been shut off by Enbridge, but displaced residents have not yet been given the green light to return to their homes. Efforts are underway to ventilate all affected homes and a structural engineer is on the way to assess structural damage to the home at the center of the crash. The driver of the black SUV fled the scene of the crash on foot, Bertram said. The area is cordoned off as officers investigate and search for the driver. No injuries have been reported. This is a developing story. More to come.
