The flame broke out at the Hernder Estate Winery around 22:00. Crews urged the public to evacuate the area, while officers worked to control the fire. The barn had been converted into a ballroom and wine shop. Aper said the incident was “a great loss to our community.” “To lose this nostalgic and inherited piece,” he said. “Our hearts go out to Hernder’s family and staff for this loss.” In a press release on Sunday, Niagara police said that due to the size of the fire and the number of crews rushing to the scene, police closed several roads in the area. Police said staff “maintain a presence and control the scene” on Sunday.
