1. Ukraine
Terrifying scenes of mass graves and killings of civilians in Ukraine over the weekend sparked international outrage as Western leaders called for stronger action to punish Russia for its alleged war crimes. Ukraine’s National Police transported a CNN team to the site of a mass grave in the city of Bukha, near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, where authorities say up to 300 people are buried. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense denies the killing of civilians and claims that the images of lifeless bodies scattered in the streets are “fake”. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called an independent inquiry into the killings “essential”. At least 1,417 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, the United Nations said today, warning that the actual death toll is likely to be much higher. Of those who died, at least 121 were children.
2. Hungary
Hungary’s authoritarian leader and longtime ally, Viktor Orban, has declared victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, closing for a fourth consecutive term in power. His campaign was dominated by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which brought Orban’s long-standing relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin under control. In his winning speech, Orban called Ukrainian President Zelensky an “opponent” he had to overcome during the campaign. Despite polls predicting a tougher race, Orban’s party won comfortably in much of the country and took the lead yesterday afternoon with 71% of the vote counted, the Hungarian National Electoral Council said. Opposition leader Peter Markey-Zei, on the other hand, failed to win in his own constituency, where he was mayor.
3. Shots
Armed violence rocked the United States this weekend, with several deadly gunfire. Many suspects opened fire in a mass shooting in downtown Sacramento yesterday morning, killing six people and leaving the city of California with a “broken heart,” the mayor said. In South Carolina, five people were found injured by gunshot wounds after a “chaotic” shooting that unfolded along a rural road, authorities said. Police are also working to uncover details of a shooting at a concert in Dallas on Saturday that left one person dead and at least 10 others injured. The same day, a shooting at a Virginia mall left one person dead and two others injured. Investigations into all these recent shootings are ongoing.
4. Coronavirus
Covid-19 federal funds are running low across the United States, making it harder for uninsured Americans to access the free resources they need to help fight the virus. Many will now have to spend money to get a coronavirus test or get treatment if they are sick because of the imminent end of the federal program that reimburses pharmacies, clinics, doctors, hospitals and other providers for screening and treating uninsured patients. . The program specifically stopped accepting new claims last week due to insufficient funds and will stop accepting new claims for the vaccination of the uninsured from tomorrow, officials said. Several industry groups representing providers are urging lawmakers to revive the effort, especially as cases of the BA.2 sub-variable increase in Europe and Asia.
5. Grammy
The 2022 Grammy Awards were presented last night with side performances by some of the world’s biggest music stars. It was a great night for three artists in particular, who left with the four biggest distinctions of the night. Jon Batiste won the album of the year for “We Are”, Silk Sonic won the album and song of the year for “Leave the Door Open” and Olivia Rodrigo left with the best young artist. There was also a virtual appearance in the middle of the show by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who spoke of Ukrainian musicians in armor and appealed for support. His appearance struck a performance by John Legend, singing “Free”, while wearing a blue suit, a visual salute to the country of Ukraine. Lenny Kravitz and HER – with Travis Barker on drums – also tore down the house with an epic rendition of “Are You Going to Go My Way”.
