Who could write history?
There are many possible milestones: If “CODA”, an Apple TV + promotion or “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix) won the best picture, it would be the first time a streaming service has won the top prize. Lin-Manuel Miranda could only become the 17th EGOT – winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award – at 42, if he wins the best original song for “Dos Oruguitas” from “Encanto” (Disney did not submit “Bruno” for consideration), or Beyoncé could win her first Oscar if she wins “Be Alive” from “King Richard”. Ariana DeBose, the favorite second actress to play Anita in “West Side Story” or Kristen Stewart, who is nominated for Best Actress for her role as Princess Diana in “Spencer”, could become first openly LGBTQ singer to win an Oscar for acting. Kotsur, from “CODA”, could also become the first deaf person to win an Oscar for acting.
Who do we think will win?
“The Power of the Dog” is still the pioneer for best film, but hardly – it will have to repel an inflated “CODA” that has won top awards at the Guild of Actors, Writers and Producers Awards. (Although he has no directorial or editorial nominations, our awards expert Kyle Buchanan predicts that voters desperately want to crown the audience.) Campion is a safe bet for the best director – Sian Heder, his director. ” CODA “, was not nominated – and Will Smith is the favorite to win his first Academy Award for Best Actor for” King Richard “. “West Side Story”‘s Kotsur and Ariana DeBose are the clear favorites in the supporting actress and actress categories, but the best actress could be a wild card – Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) has a dynamic after wins in the Critics ‘Choice Awards and the Actors Guild Awards (is our specialist’ s choice), but Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) or Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”) could play spoiler.
