The 19-year-old admits that he accidentally shot and killed his friend. Resendes pleaded guilty to manslaughter, possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of a loaded firearm and possession of cocaine for trafficking earlier this year. Chaves was shot and killed on October 17, 2020, inside Resendes’s Cambridge home on Birkinshaw Street. According to the agreed statement of facts of the case, Chaves and Resendes were longtime friends. The two were regularly friends and there were no known conflicts between them. The document said that on the night of October 17, Chaves went to Resendes’s house to hang out in the basement. Resentes pulled out a gun and accidentally pulled the trigger. The document stated that the gun was aimed at Chaves, he was shot and died in the basement. The agreed-upon statement of events stated that Resendes did not intend to kill Chaves. On Monday, the statements of the victim’s parents and girlfriend about the impact of the victim were read in court. “Our lives have changed forever,” wrote Chaves’s parents. “Mark never said goodbye. “Our hearts are broken and some of us died with Mark.” His parents called Chaves “a light in their house.” “We have been retired for more than three years and it should be our golden years, but instead it is our dark years; we miss Mark to hang out at our house, to be funny and silly.” Chaves’s girlfriend, Kaitylnn Santos, said his death left her “fragile” and “broken”. “I wish our last kiss lasted a little longer,” he said. Santos spoke directly to Resentes, saying “you took a life, the life of Mark Chavez, who you knew was my whole world; I hope you see your mistakes, your mistakes, your carelessness; you disgust me.” Resendes is scheduled to return to court on April 29, when the crown and the defense will submit the sentences for sentencing. The judge is expected to rule on his sentence later.
