Who is it for?
Apple iOS 15.4.1 and iPadOS 15.4.1 have been released for all iOS 15 compatible devices, which means iPhone 6S (2015) and newer and iPad Mini 4 (2015) and newer. There are now serious concerns about the auto-update process, so the best method is to turn it on manually by going to Settings> General> Software Update. If you are running newer beta software (see “The Road Ahead” section at the end), you must unsubscribe from your device before the update appears. Note: this guide does not focus on older iOS or iPadOS updates, but I will address related issues in these drivers.
The Deal Breakers
Jailbreakers, there is no news here. Unc0ver and checkra1n have been sidelined since iOS 15, and with a critical security update for this update (details below), it’s time to change your priorities. For everyone else, the first two days suggest that Apple has another steady release in its hands. Complaints to @AppleSupport on Twitter are minimal, while Apple Support Communities and Reddit are quiet. I’ve seen individual reports of battery depletion in iOS 15.4.1, but most users suggest that there have been tangible improvements here (see next section). Long-term complaints (Bluetooth stability, storage consumption) also seem to decrease significantly after this release. Overall, the signs are promising, though I will continue to watch as more users upgrade.
So what do you get?
The official Apple iOS 15.4.1 release notes are as follows: This update includes the following bug fixes for your iPhone: The battery may be depleted faster than expected after updating to iOS 15.4 Braille devices may not respond when text navigating or alerting Made for hearing aids iPhone may lose connection to some third-party applications “ Apple’s confirmation of a battery drain issue in iOS 15.4.1 is a surprise. Every iOS update brings complaints about battery depletion (usually until re-indexing, which takes 24-48 hours after the update), and Apple rarely recognizes problems. In addition, the complaints after the release of iOS 15.4.1 did not appear to be higher than usual. Either way, Apple has seen and modified something and all efforts to improve battery consumption are welcome. But the biggest news in this version is security. The iOS 15.4.1 security page reveals that the update contains a patch for a new “Zero-Day” vulnerability, and Apple confirms that it “is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.” This is the most dangerous type of security vulnerability. Apple iOS 15.4.1 Verdict: Upgrade
Off-portal, iOS 15.4.1 looks like a very consistent update and is also very important because of the zero-day vulnerability in iOS 15.4. Combine it with battery upgrades, and the vast majority of users should go to Settings> General> Software Update to make sure they receive the update as soon as possible. For the more hesitant, bookmark this guide. I will continue to update it with any relevant bugs or features I find and you will receive my final verdict here in a week.
The road ahead
At the time of publication, Apple has not released a new beta version of iOS 15, although I would expect the first beta of iOS 15.5 to appear next week. Another “small point” update (iOS 15.4.2) is possible before it arrives, as Apple tries to fix any remaining bugs. That said, iOS 15 is now a mature release, which is an achievement after being launched in the trash.
