One of Joseph’s roommates, Rachel Thorpe, thanked everyone who helped share information about Joseph’s disappearance and asked for confidentiality.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Joe has died tragically,” she said in a Facebook post. “We are shocked by the support and are asking for privacy right now.”
Its representative University of Birmingham said: “We are absolutely devastated to learn of Joe’s death. Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this very difficult time. We are doing everything we can to support Joe’s friends and family as well. and the wider student and staff community.
“We continue to work with the police as it conducts its investigations and we can not comment further at this stage. You will see an increased police presence in the area and at the University this afternoon. Do not hesitate to talk to them.

Joseph is believed to have studied mechanical engineering and was also a part-time math teacher, according to LinkedIn.
