The prime minister said the United Kingdom was considering “speeding up” its support for Ukraine, including the possible deployment of armored vehicles to help provide humanitarian aid to the besieged cities. The city of southern Ukraine has been the target of heavy Russian bombing. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said he would speak with Vladimir Putin to organize an “extraordinary humanitarian operation” with Turkey and Greece to evacuate. It would be the first time foreign troops had entered Ukraine since the start of the conflict, but Macron was informed by Putin on Tuesday that the bombing of Mariupol would stop only when the Ukrainian troops defending it surrendered. A Kremlin statement said: “In order to resolve the difficult humanitarian situation in this city, the Ukrainian nationalist militants must stop resisting and lay down their arms.”
