It was one of the last examples of armed violence in New York City, where statistics show that the number of shootings increased from about 238 in the same period last year to 279 so far this year until March 27. “We are really asking for the help and assistance of the public to help us resolve this issue,” Michael Kember, NYPD Assistant Director for Brooklyn South, told a news conference Thursday night. The driver, a Brooklyn woman, was abducted to eat her and the children and was shot around 7:45 p.m., police said at a news conference Thursday. The shootings came from people in two dark sedans, police said in a press release on Friday. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were eating in the vehicle” when the shooting took place, the press release states. Joe Gulotta, deputy head of NYPD Brooklyn South, asked the public for advice on two sedans that left the shooting scene. New York Mayor Eric Adams said guns on the streets of New York are a problem that needs to be fixed. “It’s time to stop,” Adams told a news conference. “That’s why we are here. We will do our job. We need everyone to help us put an end to this senseless violence.” A controversial unit within the NYPD that revived to fight rising armed violence took to the streets last month, promising significant training and even new uniforms to deter aggressive and abusive police tactics that plagued its predecessor. The latest version of civilian clothing units designed to hunt firearms was to be deployed in about 25 neighborhoods, according to officials, who account for 80 percent of the city’s armed violence. When the unit is fully built, skilled workers will be in 30 neighborhoods and in many public housing projects, city officials said. The unit replaces the crime team disbanded in 2020.
