“We have opened the door to a new variant,” Colin Furness, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Toronto, told CTV National News. “Then he eliminated all our defenses.”
Furness says politicians are lifting restrictions on COVID-19 at “a really inappropriate time” and with a “healthy dose of denial.”
“This denial will collapse as cases increase,” he warned. Furness urged residents to be “extremely careful” as the virus spreads throughout the community and advises that using a properly fitted N95 mask is “one thing that will keep you safe”. He also said that governments should update the guidelines to remind the public that “you do not want to catch COVID”. “What looks like a really mild case can cause a lot of internal damage to your body.” Watch the interview by clicking on the video at the top of this article.
