In a statement on Twitter, the outgoing leader of Britain’s largest power said it was “a great honor to serve the people of London and the United Kingdom”. Dame Cressida resigned in a surprise move in February – but agreed to stay until arrangements for a replacement were finalized. “My last working day as Commissioner Met will be April 10th. It was a great honor to serve the people of London and the United Kingdom. “I will share more about the work of the brave officers and my staff next week.” Crescent Dick pic.twitter.com/KqUoNbtVKf – Metropolitan Police (@metpoliceuk) April 2, 2022 Deputy Commissioner Sir Stephen House will remain in charge of Scotland Yard temporarily until a successor is appointed, which is expected to take place this summer. The office of London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said it will work closely with Home Secretary Priti Patel to hire a new Commissioner “to address the deep cultural issues facing the Met Police Service”. A spokesman for Mr Khan said: “The mayor thanks Dame Cressida Dick for her decades of public service. “The mayor was clear that the candidates for the next commissioner must have a plan to restore the confidence and trust of the Londoners.” Met posted a photo of Dame Cressida on Twitter and a comment from her that confirmed her departure date. He said: “It was a great honor to serve the people of London and the United Kingdom. “I will share more about the work of the brave officers and my staff next week.”
Disputes led by Dame Cressida Dick
In 2005, he was the officer responsible for the mistaken operation that led to the death of a young Brazilian, Jean Charles de Menezes. He was mistaken for a suicide bomber and was killed by gunmen while on the London Underground. The force came under fire in March 2021, following the murder of Sarah Everard by an acting police officer. Wayne Couzens, who was later sentenced to life in prison, used his position as an officer to lure the marketing manager into her death. A survey has revealed concerns about Couzens, nicknamed “The Rapist” since 2015. The Met also criticized the tough policing in a vigil in memory of Miss Everard. In June 2021, a long-awaited report of the assassination of a private detective with an ax accused the force of “institutional corruption”. An independent commission investigating the unsolved murder of Daniel Morgan, a father of two, in a pub parking lot has found “multiple very significant failures” in the initial investigation by the Met Police. In December 2021, an investigation into the four victims of serial killer Stephen Port found that Met Police mistakes “probably” contributed to the deaths, with police repeatedly missing opportunities to seize Port in 2014. In February 2022, police convicted Scotland Yard police officers of misconduct that included racism, bigotry, harassment, and abusive social media messages. The investigation initially began after a police officer reported having sex with a drunk man at a police station, but later revealed much more. The force has also been accused of acting too late in investigating alleged anti-lockdown parties at Downing Street No. 10 and across from Whitehall.
Dame Cressida will receive unused annual leave after 10 April 10, with its last working day being Sunday 24 April. Ms Patel confirmed earlier this week that Dame Cressida’s resignation would be reconsidered by outgoing police chief Sir Tom Winsor. Her resignation, which came hours after she said in an interview with the media that she had no intention of resigning, was met with disappointment by many officers. She had already faced growing criticism for her response to high-profile investigations criticizing the force, as well as for the controversial handling of a vigil that took place after the murder of Sarah Everard.
