Susy Yasmine Saad pleaded guilty in court on Monday, according to the BC Prosecutor’s Office. There is a ban on publishing the names of all the children involved in the case, except Macallan Wayne Saini. Baby Mac was just 16 months old when he died at the unlicensed and unregistered Saad Nursery in East Vancouver on January 18, 2017. Saad was indicted in 2020 following a lengthy police investigation and lawsuit filed by Macallan’s mother, Shelley Sheppard, against Saad and Vancouver Coastal Health. According to the lawsuit, the infant is believed to have died after being left unattended at Saad’s Olive Branch Daycare and drowning in an electric cable. In Saad’s response to the allegation, he denied all allegations of negligence. Under the BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act, unlicensed childcare providers are only allowed to care for two children at a time and can be fined up to $ 10,000 a day for violations. The nursery closed after the death of Baby Mac. Saad’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 4 to set a date for his conviction. The crime carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
