Two people in the camp died on the spot and two others died at the hospital, the Salem police department said in a statement. Two other people were taken to a local hospital with “life-threatening injuries” and the driver, who was the only passenger in the car, was also taken for medical treatment. Salem police identified the driver as 24-year-old Enrique Rodriguez in a statement Sunday night, saying he had been arrested on charges of first-degree murder, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. Rodriguez was driving a “two-door sports coupe”, the police statement added. Police also said they were “actively investigating the circumstances and believe that alcohol may have contributed”. “It’s a tragedy,” Josh Lair, who heads Be Bold Street Ministries, an organization that serves homeless people in Salem, told the New York Times. “This city, everyone will be affected by it. “It’s a horrible thing to do,” Lair added. Other people in the camp, including three people who were later taken to a local motel, were helped by police to gather their belongings and find alternative shelter, the press release added.
