(Thick Billed Murres, via Gov NL) Canadian Environment and Climate Change officials are investigating reports of dead and dead seabirds appearing in various locations along New York’s northeast coast and in parts of Labrador. Department officials say that while the exact number of infected birds has not been confirmed, reports range from tens to hundreds in various locations. Reports of dead or dying turrets and pigeons have been received from southern Labrador, including Mary’s Harbor, and some unconfirmed reports surrounding the Black Tickle. More birds have been reported in the White Bay area, including Seal Cove and Hampden and along the northeast coast of Fogo Island, Twillingate, Deadman’s Bay and Cape Freels. The Department says it will take several weeks to conduct the necessary testing to determine what kills the birds. Samples are sent to outsourced laboratories to reduce the possible cause of death. In the meantime, the department advises that dead, injured or sick birds should not be touched and should be referred immediately to the Wildlife Emergency Number at 685-7273.
