The Dutchman, who, as revealed by Manchester Evening News, is United ‘s preferred candidate for the role, was interviewed for the job just a week ago and is the consistent favorite to replace Ralph Rangnick this summer. Ten Hag has been associated with work at Old Trafford for several months and is a popular choice among fans. The battle for the coach’s hot seat at Old Trafford looks set to be a straightforward one between Ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino. The latter is interested in the position and was ready to leave the French giants in the middle of the season in November to return to England. However, the Dutchman seems to downplay the fact that he and United had talks. “Everyone knows each other in the industry,” Ten Hag told Sport1. “There are always discussions with representatives of other clubs, this is normal. “Manchester United is a great club with great fans. But I can only repeat myself: My focus is entirely on Ajax. We are already planning for the new season.” With a contract with the Dutch giants until the summer of 2023, Ten Hague is right to remain committed to his current role as Ajax boss. However, he refused to rule out leaving the club for a new challenge. The Dutchman continued: “At the moment I am focusing only on Ajax. But in football you never know. I do not want to rule anything out. I am currently working here in Ajax to play. “With the cup final against Eindhoven, we still have eight finals and I need all my energy for that. Anything else would be distracting. I know that in football everything can change overnight. “If at some point I decide to take the next step, I hope people here will understand.” Ten Haag, however, has not set a deadline for when he will decide on his future, adding: “I have sat with Ajax after every season so far. This will happen this time too. “I can say that Ajax and Eric ten Hague are very happy with each other right now.” Subscribe to our United newsletter so you never miss an update from Old Trafford this season.
