“Just a few seconds changed this day, tore down our family and changed our whole existence,” Binta Chaudhari, the mother of the family, said in an emotional speech to the media.
The teenage driver was 16 years old at the time and could not be named under the Juvenile Justice Act. On Monday, he was sentenced to one year in open detention for young people, with an additional six months of community supervision and a six-year driving ban.
Following the conviction, the family read out prepared statements, indicating that the family “would have no sense of justice from the court ruling today,” Bida explained.
“I have to admit we were completely helpless and vulnerable to the recklessness of a stranger,” said father Ketan Chaudhari. “I have to accept the catastrophe in my family. “And I have to accept the laws that protect the guilty.”
