Firefighters respond to an RV on fire north of Vernon. UPDATE: 5:59 p.m The fire chief for BX Swan Lake Fire Rescue says an RV that burned along Highway 97 Sunday afternoon is a “total write-off,” but no one was injured as a result of the fire. Bill Wacey said about 17 firefighters were called to the RV fire, which started about 4 p.m. He said the RV driver noticed something was wrong and ended up exiting the 97 freeway at Meadowlark Road, just north of Vernon. “There was only one passenger in there, he noticed smoke coming out of the back end of it,” Wacey said. “He made several attempts to get off the freeway as the 97 freeway is extremely busy this time of year and time of day. I managed to get off the corner on the side street, Meadowlark.” He said the RV was heavily damaged due to the intensity of the fire. Wacey said crews tried to use fire extinguishers at first, but “it got too intense, too fast.” “It is the erasure, a complete erasure. these things go up extremely fast, not much in the making of these things. It went up really fast, even before the first engine arrived, it was already bursting through the roof,” Wacey said. “I was first on the scene and it was burning in the back of the motorhome near the exhaust area. So by the time we pulled away, we had propane bottles that started going off, which apparently set everyone back until the engine got to the scene.” Wacey said the fire did not spread beyond the RV.
