The proposed wage increase to $ 15.50 an hour will take effect on October 1, as Ontarians are expected to go to the polls in June. The government of Prime Minister Doug Ford previously canceled an increase in the minimum wage in 2019 to $ 15 from $ 14 an hour, but then increased the salary to $ 15 an hour in January this year. Other provincial parties have promised to raise the minimum wage if elected. Opposition New Democrats have said they will raise the minimum wage to $ 16 from Oct. 1 if elected to form a government and raise the wage to $ 20 an hour in 2026. The Liberals promise a salary increase of $ 16 an hour by January 1, 2023 if elected.
