An accumulation on Highway 33 south of the Big White resulted in multiple injuries. UPDATE 2 p.m. Highway 33 is now open again for alternating single-lane traffic. Motorists will have to wait for delays while traveling to the scene of the collision south of the Big White turn. UPDATE 1:25 p.m. BC Emergency Health Services says three ambulances responded to the crash on Highway 33 south of Big White. A total of three patients were transported to the hospital in stable condition. The highway is expected to reopen at 3 p.m. UDPATE 12:40 p.m. One of the first drivers to visit the crowd on Highway 33 south of the Big White says the collision involved four pickups and a dual-axle trailer. DriveBC says the highway is now closed in both directions with an estimated reopening time of 3 p.m. Brian says the vehicles fell off the nose-to-tail road at a bend in the road. “There was an elderly couple in blue, I think it was a Ford Ranger, they were nailed there, the woman was in a very bad condition,” he said. Another man in the same vehicle had to be released by firefighters. He was conscious and talking, but he was “really tired.” “As I was trying to open the door, a bunch of other people showed up, including a nurse. We tried, I disconnected the battery in the truck. “I tried everything to get the man out,” he said. The passers-by did not manage to pull the man out of the wreck and finally the firefighters cut him off. Police said the injuries appeared to be serious but not life-threatening. Brian said they had to wait about an hour for firefighters to reach the man to free him, “the streets were just awful.” “It started with icy rain. And this was accumulating on the ground. “I was heading south there and I had to turn on all four wheels – there was no visibility, just awful,” he said. UPDATE 12:10 p.m. The BC Highway Patrol says it is responding to a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 33 about 10 miles south of Big White Brake Control. A police spokesman could not confirm initial reports that several vehicles were involved in the crash. However, Cpl. Mike Halskov said four tow trucks had been sent to clean up the damaged vehicles. There are some “serious” injuries, but nothing that seems to be life threatening. Inadequate mobile service and bad weather have made it difficult to obtain information from the crash site in these early stages, Halskov said. The collision occurred around 11 a.m. Officers from the Kelowna RCMP are also assisting in removing the crash. ORIGINAL 12 p.m. Motorists are told to expect delays on Highway 33 south of the Big White turn due to a collision of several vehicles. Emergency crews are at the scene between McCulloch Rd. and Big White Rd., near the intersection of Okanagan Falls Forest Service Road. DriveBC cameras show winter driving conditions in the area.
