Police told CTV News that officers responded to a scene on Radcliffe Drive SE after reports of a shooting.
The incident on Tuesday afternoon happened around 6:15 p.m. and police believe several shots were fired in a targeted attack.
Officers attended the scene and spoke to witnesses later in the evening.
A witness, who asked to be identified only as Jeff, told CTV he was riding his scooter home from work when he heard what sounded like fireworks and then saw a white car “zip out of the parking lot.”
He called the experience “surreal.”
“Especially, you’re there right when it’s happening … checking yourself and everything to make sure you’re all OK,” he said.
Jeff lives nearby and said: “We feel like we’re in gangs now.”
“It used to not be like that. But especially in this neighborhood, I guess, it’s kind of the norm.”
No arrests have been made, and at this time, police have not released any information about injuries or the people involved.
This is the city’s 97th shooting this year.
It’s also the latest in a string of violent incidents in Calgary that have police concerned about public safety.
“This pace of filming is concerning,” Depp said. Chief Chad Tawfik with the Calgary Police Service (CPS) on Tuesday.
On Monday, police were called to respond to a shooting in Pineridge that officials said involved two vehicles. Shell casings were found at the scene, but no injuries were reported and no buildings were hit.
Tawfik said they usually see an increase in shootings in July and August, but this is different.
“The sequence of events as they unfolded is of concern to us and we are pursuing additional investigative tasks and resources to address this,” he said.
As for how that compares to other Canadian cities, Edmonton has reported 93 shootings so far this year, compared to 99 this time in 2021.
Meanwhile, Ottawa has seen 40 so far and Toronto has reported 253 gunshots and discharges.
Doug King, a justice professor at Mount Royal University, said city size isn’t what matters when comparing these things, but rather who lives there and what deeper problems those cities face.
He said Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver are closely connected.
“Drugs, guns, prostitution are all part of this kind of three-city nexus, and lo and behold, it’s actually Kelowna that’s the distribution center in Alberta,” King said.
While the majority of shootings in Calgary are targeted, only a quarter of them are related to organized crime conflicts, according to police.
“The other 75 percent is usually around interpersonal conflicts, it can be due to a variety of factors, whether it’s drug-related or other conflict that has arisen between the parties,” Tawfik said.
“To link it directly to organized crime, we have to know that the individuals involved are connected to an organized crime group, so the differentiation, and it’s a pretty high bar to get into that category.”
PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE#
Calgary police are still looking for suspects in many of the incidents, but add that many of the shootings were committed with illegal weapons.
Tawfik says authorities have seized more than 300 weapons during searches since the start of the year. They range from unrestricted rifles and shotguns to restricted firearms such as pistols.
Meanwhile, Dr. John Kortbeek, a trauma surgeon who has seen his share of gunshot patients, says gun crime should be treated as a public health problem.
“Then we can approach it like we do any other public health issue, which is to identify what are the causes, what are the drivers that increase the number of firearm injuries, and then what interventions can we make that can reduce the severity of the injury?”
Kortbeek adds that gunshot injuries take up a lot of health care resources.
“Victims of gunshot injuries often suffer severe and multiple injuries. They are very sick people. They require a huge team to take care of them and they are resource intensive,” he told CTV News.
“It also affects people, not just at the time of their injury, but for years afterwards. Many of them have long-term disability, provided they survive. And it affects their families, so it has multi-dimensional effects on the community, on the patients, on the hospital system.”
The recent spate of shootings is also taking up a lot of police resources as investigators work around the clock to find the suspects.
“They’re working all these files to bring people to justice for this. So, whatever offenders are out there, they definitely know we’re watching out for them,” Tawfik said.
“We don’t want to see more people becoming victims of gun crime.”
The investigation into the latest incident is ongoing.
