Alan Anthony Rothwell, 34, of Mowbray Street in Heaton, Newcastle, was charged with rape and was in the Newcastle courtroom on Saturday. No details have been released about his next appearance in court and his detention or bail status at this stage.
As previously reported, a woman reported being attacked in Rising Sun Country Park, Benton, on Monday, March 28, at about 4:10 p.m. near the Pit Heap area.

The research is still going on and we are again asking people to show up and they are very interested in anyone who may have footage like CCTV or dashboard camera, which could be useful for our research. “Now that someone has been charged, we would also ask people to avoid speculation that could affect the case in the future.” The officer added: “Fortunately, such incidents are rare, but when they do occur, we are committed to supporting and protecting the victims and will use every tactic at our disposal to ensure that anyone responsible is brought to justice.” Police want to hear from anyone who has a CCTV video, dashboard camera or doorbell showing a man in the Rising Sun Country Park area from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday.
