Queues are said to form as passengers wait their turn to go through security checks. This comes as the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) stated that it has struggled with easing restrictions and staff shortages, as well as with large numbers of luggage discarded for security reasons.
Manchester Airport baggage handlers also said they were “more stressed than ever” by “unexpected” demand in recent weeks. Bosses have now warned that the chaotic queues could continue into the summer, leaving anyone with a booking flight from Manchester in the coming months worried about whether or not to fly.

In recent weeks, Manchester Airport has always given general guidance that passengers should be “checked and ready to go through security at least two hours” before the departure time of their flight. But, as airport guests said Manchester Evening News that it took them four hours to get through security, it is obvious that two hours may no longer give holidaymakers enough time to catch their flight. Manchester Airport was approached for comment in the midst of the chaos and told MEN: “We would advise passengers to arrive at the earliest time suggested by their airline – which is usually the check-in time for their flight – and re-familiarize yourself with hand luggage rules before you travel, as additional luggage control can increase waiting time safely. Two airlines told MEN that they now recommend their passengers arrive at the airport up to three hours before departure. A TUI UK spokesman said: “TUI advises customers to arrive up to three hours before departure and allow extra time to pass through security before going to their boarding gate.” A British Airways spokesman also confirmed that the airline “advises customers to arrive at Manchester Airport three hours before departure”. CheapJet did not give a specific time frame, but a spokesman told us: “We are aware of security delays at Manchester Airport today and therefore we advise customers to arrive at the airport well in advance of their flight. We continue to work with Manchester Airport to ensure that our customer experience through the airport is as fast and easy as possible. “ For any other airline, it is advisable to check directly with them for the time they would recommend you arrive.
