Hawkins died Friday (March 25) at the age of 50 and was found in his hotel room in the Colombian capital, just hours before the Foo Fighters made their way to a festival in the city as part of a tour of South America. After his death, the Colombian Attorney General’s Office and the National Institute of Forensic Medicine revealed that a preliminary toxicological examination revealed that many drugs, including opiates, antidepressants and marijuana, were found in Hawkins’s system at the time of his death. A statement added that emergency services were called after a patient complained of chest pains. When they arrived, they tried to resuscitate the drummer but they did not succeed and his death was confirmed on the spot. See the reports and statements below.

His musical spirit and his infectious laughter will live with all of us forever. “Our hearts are with his wife, children and family and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.” The band is currently touring South America and was set to play at the Estero Picnic Festival in Bogota on the night of Hawkins’s death. His last appearance with the band was a front page set at Lollapalooza Argentina on March 22nd. Following the news of his death, fans took to social media to share footage from Hawkins, who last played at the festival. Ever since the news of Hawkins’s death broke, a number of actors have paid tribute to Hawkins, including Coldplay and Liam Gallagher – both of whom have dedicated songs in his honor to their own gigs over the weekend. Miley Cyrus, who was to share a line-up with the Foo Fighters in Lollapalooza Brazil last night, dedicated her set there to Hawkins. Writing on Instagram, he posted: “This is how I will always remember you”. Stereophonics also paid tribute last night (March 26), covering the success of Foo Fighters “Best Of You” at a concert in Brighton.
