The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said in a press release on Monday that the 49-year-old woman suffered a “strained shoulder” after having an “interaction” with a Toronto police officer on horseback during the last weekend of protesters occupying the streets of the city center. He was among a group of protesters on Rideau Street in front of the Fairmont Château Laurier on the night of February 18, when police on horseback entered the crowd to create a distance between protesters and police, the statement said. A horse near the edge of the unit was “communicating” with a man and a woman, hitting them on the ground. Pedestrian police officers encircled two – like protesters – and woman helped to get up, according to SIU. The woman visited Montfort Hospital and two days later Lennox & Addington County General Hospital with shoulder pain, the SIU reported. The incident sparked false rumors that a woman had been trampled by a horse. The SIU opened the investigation after claiming he had been seriously injured, according to a statement in late February. The investigation found no fractures or serious injuries. Joseph Martino, the director of the SIU, decided to close the case after her unit interviewed and examined her medical records, as well as police footage from drones and body-worn cameras. “As the woman was not” seriously injured “under the terms of the SIU’s mandate, the SIU has no jurisdiction to investigate the matter and the case is closed,” Monday’s statement said. The SIU referred the case to Toronto police for further investigation, “as they see fit.”
