A 35-year-old man believed to be the target of the fatal shooting that killed Olivia Pratt-Korbel, 9, has been arrested. Merseyside Police said the man was on probation but is now being held in hospital and will be recalled to prison to serve the remainder of his licence. Detective Chief Constable Mark Kameen renewed an appeal for members of the community to come forward with information about the shooting. “This is no time for anyone who knows who was responsible to remain silent. It’s time we all made Merseyside a place where the use of guns on our streets is completely unacceptable and those who use them are held to account,” said Mr Keenan. Police hunting the gunman responsible for killing Olivia Pratt-Korbel have received the name of a suspect from two different sources, according to reports.

Assistant Bishop of Liverpool Tom Williams said he thought the city had changed in the 15 years since Rhys Jones’ death. He said: “I think Liverpool is a different city to what it was 15 years ago. “I imagine the community right now is feeling kind of frustrated, scared, anxious and worried, and I think in a way it’s going to bring them closer together. “If people are afraid to come forward, we need to know what they are afraid of. You can’t blame people for being afraid. “I think what the police are doing is very reasonable. “Now people need each other. Don’t let this divide you further, people need to talk to each other and be able to share.” Thomas Kingsley24 August 2022 12:20 1661338852

Criminals are a “very small minority” in Liverpool, says Bishop

The Bishop of Liverpool has denied the city is “divided” over the death of Olivia Pratt-Corbel, as police appeal for help from the community to find her killer. The nine-year-old was fatally shot on Monday night as a gunman tried to break into her family’s home in Kingsheath Avenue, Knotty Ash. Merseyside Police have warned against a “no weed” culture prevalent among locals, while the Liverpool Echo urged readers to “not hand over our city to thugs”. In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Bishop Tom Williams said the community was angry about Olivia’s death. “The only thing that gets me is people have the impression that we’re a divided city, you know, there’s criminals and everything,” he said. “It’s not split 50/50, there’s a very small percentage and they’re the ones who get all the headlines all the time I think, which upsets me more than anything.” He criticized the Liverpool Echo’s front page – which asked readers “Which side are you on?” – and said criminals make up a “very small minority” of the city. Football pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called for stricter gun and knife laws following the fatal shooting of Olivia Pratt-Corbel. In a message to Merseyside Police, Metro Mayor Steve Rotherham and newly elected mayoress Joanne Anderson, the Sky Sports pundit said: “Gun and knife crime in this country and especially in my city at the moment it is out of control, we need longer sentences for people found guilty of this crime. This story is heartbreaking.” Aston Villa manager and former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard also expressed his sadness over the shooting, posting a photo of Olivia followed by a photo of Wednesday’s front page in the Liverpool Echo which reads ‘Whose side are you on?’ Thomas Kingsley24 August 2022 10:30 1661332523

Criminals targeting Olivia’s killer ‘rare’, ex-constable says

The former chief constable of Greater Manchester Police has played down the possibility of criminals being involved in the killer of Olivia Pratt-Korbel. Asked on Sky News whether criminal gangs would respond to an appeal by Merseyside Police, Sir Peter Fahy said: “It’s very rare, really. “This, at the end of the day, is either going to be a lucky piece of information from the public, a really good analysis of mobile phone data. “Sometimes another criminal gang will make it to their advantage to pass on information that could lead to the breakup of another criminal gang. “Often, when gang members suffer the most horrific injuries, they refuse to cooperate with the police or tell the police what happened. “Because they want revenge themselves or just out of fear.” Thomas Kingsley24 August 2022 10:15 1661331623

Police under ‘extreme pressure’ to find Olivia Pratt-Corbel’s killer

Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner has said police are under extreme pressure to find Olivia Pratt-Corbel’s killer. Emily Spurrell told BBC Breakfast: “I think it’s intense… We’ve pulled in support from neighboring powers to make sure that, you know, we can put everything into this investigation to find out who did this. “But also to provide some of that visible resource to the community as well.” He also denied that Liverpool had failed to change after the murder of 11-year-old Rhys Jones, who was shot in Croxteth exactly 15 years before Olivia’s death. “I think we’re a very different city than we were 15 years ago,” he said. “The culture is very different – I think if you looked at it before this week, you would have seen a downward trajectory, we have the lowest firearms discharges in 21 years.” Thomas Kingsley24 August 2022 09:45
