The Caleb Love game. The Tar Heels are one of eight teams left after the 73-66 victory over UCLA.
Love, who was not good at all in the first half, was just shocking in the second half. He made 10 of his 16 attempts for a goal and five for nine from three points, scoring 27 points at halftime (the rest of the team had 16). The second year guard finished with 30 for the game.
Carolina went very heavy three-pointers in the stretch. By the time of the possession, with less than a minute to go, the Heels of Piss had scored 14 of their last 15 three-point shots and ten in a row. It ended when RJ Davis missed a shot on the lane and Armando Bacot put it back. The Tar Heels scored in their last five possessions and finished the game with a series of 12-2.
Hubert Davis’s strong call to run a half-court set for Brady Manek with 4:30 left. At that point, Manek had not fired a shot at half time, he was very disappointed in himself and Carolina fell by two. Manek tightened it. Carolina also made a play-off for Manek with just over three minutes left. It’s very simple: Hubert Davis trusts Manek, who finished 5-for-13 for 13 points.
Johnny Juzang is one of the first players in about a month to show some offensive success against Leaky Black’s defense. Juzang put in 14, but was just 2-to-8 in the second half.
After handing out the ball very well at Fort Worth, Carolina went one-on-one against the Bruins. The Tar Heels had just 11 assists in 27 goals.
Carolina quietly took a few good minutes from Puff Johnson in that game. Faced with a tough defensive mission against Johnny Juzang, Johnson stayed with him heavily throughout the pitch, especially in a key part of the second half when Hubert Davis was sitting on an emotional Brady Manek. Johnson was credited with two rebounds, but was actually responsible for another offensive rebound he saved under the Pissou Heel basket. Davis (who coached in a terrific game) trusted Johnson twice in the second half – once for Bakot and once for Manek – and the second student gave the opportunity.
Armando Bacot overtook Ronnie Shavlik (who also ranks first and second on this list) for sixth on the ACC All-Time list for one season rebounds. Next on this list is Tim Duncan. Bacot finished with his 28th double-double of the season, scoring 14 points to continue with 15 rebounds. The record holder of a season in this category for the ACC is Duncan with 29, which means that Bacot could equalize him in the next round.
Large attendance of Carolina basketball alumni on hand in Philadelphia for the game. An unofficial and probably incomplete list includes Tyler Hansbrough, Marcus Ginyard, Jesse Holley, Bobby Frasor, Shammond Williams, Dave Hanners, Melvin Scott and Walker Miller. Roy Williams was of course on the stands of the Wells Fargo Center.
Carolina will face the nation’s favorite, Saint Peter’s, on Sunday in TBA time to have the opportunity to go to the Final Four.
