Just over a month after UBCO guard Harmandeep Kaur was killed while working in Kelowna, police say a local has been charged with murder. The RCMP announced on Tuesday that Dante Ognibene-Hebbourn, 22, was charged with a second-degree murder charge following an investigation by the Kelowna Serious Crimes Unit. On February 26, the RCMP responded to a report of an attack on one of the buildings on the UBCO campus. A man who worked at the school as a night watchman allegedly attacked a security guard, who later died at the hospital. Police say Ognibene-Hebbourn was arrested and charged with murder on Tuesday and will appear in court on Wednesday. “It was a difficult week for the community after the tragic events of February 26. The response to support the woman’s family was remarkable. I would like to thank the Kelowna Serious Crimes Unit and the first responders to work to bring this of the court, “said Inspector Beth McAndie, Kelowna RCMP Research Officer. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends and colleagues right now. We will continue to provide any support they may need as we prepare for the upcoming trial,” McAndie added. Ognibene-Hebbourn was initially arrested by police under the Mental Health Act. According to the RCMP, Ognibene-Hebbourn remained in the hospital throughout the investigation.
