Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin once again heeds the call of the Bat-Signal.

Tomlin is teaming up again with Matt Reeves to write The Batman 2, the follow-up to Reeves’ well-received performance starring Robert Pattinson in the Caped Crusader that proved to be a huge hit with audiences.

Plot details are kept in the Batcave. It’s not even clear if the sequel will feature the Joker, Batman’s classic nemesis teased in the final moments of Reeves’ film and played by Barry Keoghan. The news comes as Reeves signs a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Tomlin worked on The Batman, stepping in during development when third-act problems arose, although he did not receive a screenplay credit – which Reeves shared with Peter Craig. This time, Tomlin is coming in on the ground floor.

The Batman, released on March 4, took a strict crime drama approach to the DC character’s superheroes, earning $770.8 million worldwide in the process. Reeves’ involvement in a sequel was not guaranteed, and the deal took longer than normal to complete, thanks in part to Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia, which unfolded in the spring.

The writing process has not yet begun, but is expected in the coming weeks.

Fast-rising screenwriter Tomlin had two acclaimed films in 2020, including the action thriller Project Power, starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and he wrote and made his 2021 directorial debut Mother/Android, a sci-fi thriller which starred Chloe Grace Moretz. Tomlin met Reeves on Mother/Android, which the Batman director produced.

Tomlin worked on Batman and also made his comic book debut writing a Batman miniseries titled Batman: The Imposter, drawn by Andrea Sorrentino and released in 2021 to rave reviews. Tomlin is now working on BRZRKR, the Netflix adaptation of Boom! Studios book was created by Keanu Reeves.

He is repped by CAA and Grandview.
