Adrianne Grayson, 33, from Dallas, Texas, began to feel bloated and had stomach cramps on September 27, 2021 and misunderstood that she was in labor and had to go to the bathroom. Soon, she and her husband gave birth to their son Apollo, who weighed a healthy 6 lbz 9 oz, on the bathroom floor. The mother of six said the sudden birth was a complete shock. She had no prenatal symptoms and did not gain weight, even losing 9 kilos in the first two months of her pregnancy. She now has six children with her ten-year-old husband, including a 14-year-old stepdaughter from her husband’s previous relationship. Adrianne said: “During my other pregnancies, I had all the regular symptoms, but I had nothing to do with Apollo. “I had a huge blow with my other kids. I really had some hip problems during my other pregnancies because of the weight I was carrying with the babies. “I knew what the pregnancy was like and how I felt, but I had no idea I was expecting Apollo. Adrianne said she had a huge lump and problems in her hip due to the weight while carrying her other babies. I started at 150 pounds and then dropped to 141 pounds before returning to 150 pounds again. “But about two months before the birth, I started to have bloating from time to time. “I do not have the best digestive system and I often had bloating with certain foods, so I did not think of anything.” Adrianne revealed that she matched her usual clothes throughout her pregnancy, including her tighter shorts. She did yoga and took a bath in an effort to alleviate her discomfort. Adrianne then decided to use the toilet to try to “hurt” for relief – but instead left the bathroom with a newborn baby. Adrianne’s youngest child was one year old when she gave birth to Apollo in September last year. Adrianne said: “I started having a very painful bloating the day I was born. Adrianne tried to alleviate her discomfort by doing yoga and bathing before trying to use the toilet. In the photo: Eight months pregnant Adrianne said the instinct clicked and went into a state of emergency after she put her hand in and felt a baby’s head. I did some yoga in the afternoon to ease my pain and went into the bathtub thinking that my cramps would subside. “I was worried that I might have to go to the emergency room because I was in so much pain. I now realize that these cramps were contractions and I had probably given birth for several hours. “Anyway, I got out of the bathtub and sat on the toilet thinking maybe I should get something out.

How common are cryptic pregnancies?

One in 450 pregnant women in the UK is unaware that they are going to have a baby by the 20th week of pregnancy (halfway there) and one in 2,500 women is unaware of it until they start giving birth. It is a phenomenon known as cryptic pregnancy – also referred to as “pregnancy denial”. Cryptic pregnancies usually affect either young women who have never been pregnant or women who believe they have gone through menopause and choose not to use contraception. Women with unstable menstrual cycles are also more likely to lose the signs they are expecting. This is especially true for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where small cysts develop in the ovaries. Hormonal imbalance often leads to irregular or non-existent periods. However, there are some women who will continue to have monthly bleeding throughout their pregnancy. In this case, a local GP scan may be the only confirmation method. Women may not just expect to find out they are pregnant if they take the pill – but then those who take it religiously can become pregnant. Eight out of 100 women can become pregnant while taking the pill – usually not because of problems with the pill, but with the person taking it, either because they missed the pill, because they vomited or had diarrhea. “But when I thought I was just doing something wrong, I heard something explode. Immediately, I was like my water is not breaking properly? “I put my hand in and felt a baby’s head. Suddenly my instinct struck, I was in a state of emergency and I knew I had to give birth to this baby. “I pushed very hard. I swear that within five minutes, the baby was out and I was holding Apollo in my arms. “It was honestly like holding an alien at the time because I could not believe what I was seeing. “I screamed for my husband. He ran into the bathroom and saw the baby I was holding. Adrianne said her husband was in complete shock and had to instruct him to call the midwife immediately Adrianne said she was “really relieved” when Apollo arrived and that they fit in perfectly with their family. Photo: Adrianne and baby Apollo in December 2021 “I remember him looking at me in shock. The only words that came out of his mouth were “My God”. “I told my husband to call my midwife immediately. At 2 in the morning, my midwife’s delivery assistant came and helped me and Apollo clean up. “When Apollo arrived, I was really relieved because I finally knew what was causing my cramps. “Apollo was definitely my easiest pregnancy. I ate so much healthy and exercised regularly that I wonder if that was the reason I did not have the usual great tiredness and fatigue with it. “Apollo is such a cool baby and he fits in perfectly with our family. “But six children is definitely enough for now.”
