Travelodge opened last year (Image: Leicester Mercury / Chris Gordon) A shopper returning to his car after a trip to the city center said he saw part of the tragedy unfold as doctors struggled to save the mother and baby – they were given cardiopulmonary resuscitation there in the rooftop car park. “It must be the most heartbreaking thing I have ever seen,” he said. The man, who did not want to be named, said he was about to leave the parking lot when he heard the sirens down the street. “I was in the parking lot when there was a sudden commotion,” he said. “There were ambulances running on the ramp of the multi-storey car park. “I realized it was because the ambulances could not reach the roof and were still down the road. More ambulances were coming out of the car lifts. “A little later, I saw a lot of police cars and smaller ambulances reach the roof. I did not want to get in anyone’s street and there were several other people waiting there like me.” “Everyone was heading to the main entrance of the hotel and I knew something very serious had to happen,” he added. “Shortly afterwards, I saw a woman leaving the hotel in an ambulance trolley. “Behind her, the doctors had a baby. Then I noticed that the paramedics were giving CARPA to the woman – and I soon realized that they were doing the same to the baby. “They were trying to save their lives as we were all there unable to help. It was absolutely creepy.” Rescuers used the mall’s elevators to transport the mother and child to the ambulances they were waiting for. “It was all over in about half an hour,” said the eyewitness. “I was standing there shocked and thinking that I was doing what I just saw was really happening. He was so upset and I was just hoping and praying that he would be fine.” A Leicestershire police spokesman said: “Police officers were called by the East Midlands Ambulance Service just before 3pm yesterday (March 24) to a hotel in Haymarket Mall, Leicester. The call was made after a newborn baby was delivered to a hotel room and that mother and child did not respond. “The police went to the spot and the two were taken to the hospital where, unfortunately, they were found dead shortly after their arrival,” he added. “The deaths are not treated as suspects, but unexplained, while further investigations are underway.” An eyewitness who saw part of the frantic emergency revealed why he contacted LeicestershireLive. “I just wanted to inform people about the incredible work that emergency services are doing,” he said. “You hear that the police and ambulance staff are being abused by people when they do their job. “Their dignity, their determination, their professionalism and their care – even in the most terrible conditions, really moved me. I have so much admiration for them. “You do not really realize what they have to deal with, or what they have dealt with, before they get to the next incident – so maybe it’s time for them to get the respect they deserve.” LeicestershireLive contacted Travelodge and the East Midlands Ambulance Service for comment.
