Christian Eriksen scored two minutes after coming off the bench on his return to Denmark in a 4-2 defeat by the Netherlands. Eriksen was playing for his country for the first time since his heart attack at Euro 2020 last June. The midfielder, who has since joined Premier League club Brentford, made an amazing finish in the top corner. And he could have had a second when he got out of the area, but he made a great shot on the crossbar. Tottenham Ste Steven Bergwijn scored twice, with Nathan Ake and Memphis Depay also on the sheet, while Jannik Vestergaard scored Denmark’s first goal. However, the 30-year-old Eriksen appeared for his 110th appearance as a change in the second half after huge applause from the crowd at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, home of the former Ajax club. Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal was among those who applauded Eriksen, who applauded the reception in return. Just two minutes later he sent his teammates and fans in for a surprise, making a sure finish from Andreas Skov Olsen’s cut. The Netherlands welcomes Germany in a tasty friendly on Tuesday (19:45 BST), while Denmark is at home with Serbia on the same day (17:00).
