Netflix Never Have I Ever has to be one of Netflix’s most successful original comedies at this point, this side of Bojack Horseman, as it’s a rare sitcom that dominates the top 10 when it arrives and stays there long enough. However, although it held on for a week at the top of Netflix’s top 10 list, Never Have I Ever was indeed dethroned by a new series. Well, it’s not a new show in this case, it’s an old show, the one he previously canceled, The Sandman. But the situation is a bit strange. It’s not just because The Sandman is so popular that it went back to number one after people finished Never Have I Ever. It’s because The Sandman, two weeks after release, took the highly unusual step of releasing a secret, eleventh bonus episode to join the original season one ten. Top 10 Netflix The episode included two stand-alone stories, Dream of a Thousand Cats and Calliope, stories that didn’t quite fit into the original series, but were filmed and Netflix and the showrunners wanted to air them all the same. But rather giving them a somewhat silly ending to Season 1, they ended up deciding that the best time to release the bonus episode was now, after viewers were done, creating a pretty unusual situation that we’ve hardly ever seen on Netflix. But they wanted it to be a secret surprise that way. It looks like it was enough to push The Sandman to #1, though I’d expect it to be short-lived once people get over the new episode. The show that might be #1 by the time I finish writing this is the new series Echoes, the critically acclaimed mystery about a pair of twins where one goes missing, starring Michelle Monaghan and Matt Bomer. But bad reviews have never stopped a Netflix series from making the list, and it looks like it might be the next number one for a spell. Never Have I Ever is now in third place, but its placement won’t determine its fate, unlike most Netflix shows. Why; Because all this is already settled. Netflix has already renewed Never Have I Ever for a fourth and final season, which will be Devi’s senior year, which will take her all the way through high school and end before the show does an awkward college breakup with the cast. The show has only lost Paxton since he graduated, but it’s unclear what role he might continue to have in Season 4 as an ASU student. So I expect the list to change a bit here and there, with this odd Sandman episode throwing a wrench into the usual machinations. My guess is that Selling the OC will hit #1 when it debuts this coming weekend. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
