“This is an important moment for our province,” Prime Minister Blaine Higgs said in a statement. “Our population growth strategy exceeds expectations. We are experiencing higher levels of migration and positive inter-provincial migration.” The province’s population has grown by 40,000 in five years and by 15,000 in the last 12 months. The good news: The population of New Brunswick has just reached 800,000!

As of Saturday, the Statistical Office of Canada lists the county’s population at 800,052.

Encouraging sign

“A population of 800,000 is a major achievement for the county,” said John Wishart, CEO of the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce. “Just five years ago there were stories of disaster and gloom over the fact that our population seemed to have stagnated.” Wishart said the fact that the county’s population has grown by 40,000 in just five years is an encouraging sign for the health of the economy. He said the province’s forecasts to reach a population of 1,000,000 by 2050 now seem feasible. Wishart said much of this growth is due to immigrants who frequently move to the county with large families and Canadians who move to New Brunswick from other counties, including Ontario. “We are seeing an increase in the number of students in schools and people of working age,” he said. “Despite increases in things like housing and inflationary pressures, New Brunswick is still considered a relatively low cost and safe place to live and work,” Wishart said. He said businesses are likely to start seeing the positive effects of this population growth as life begins to look normal after the pandemic. Wishart said one of the challenges with this growing population is housing. The vacancy rate in Greater Moncton is currently 1.5%. “Most homeowners will tell you that the four percent vacancy rate is virtually zero because of the turnover and the people who come and go,” he said.
