Photo: BCNU The BC Nurses Association is stepping up its efforts to highlight the struggles facing its members as the healthcare crisis deepens in British Columbia. The union says nurses’ mental health status is at an all-time low, in part because of what they call the burden of a deteriorating healthcare system. BCNU is launching a new advertising campaign that aims to show the real pressure on the county health system and those who work in it. The new campaign will run until May 15 on TV, social media and digital platforms across the province, including its own microsite. BCNU President Aman Grewal says it ‘s hard to hear from nurses across the county being called in to do more and more with less and less. In some cases, nurses leave the profession altogether due to overwork. “The current state of our healthcare system is really heartbreaking,” Grewal added. “More than three-quarters of the nurses told us that their mental health had deteriorated during the pandemic. and more than half have stated that their physical health has also deteriorated. “Our government must prioritize the well-being of our nurses – the future of our provincial health care system depends on it.” The BCNU calls on the provincial government to do more to help retain nurses and address workplace safety. “Our nurses work tirelessly to provide care to patients at the expense of their own health. “It’s time for nurses to get the support and resources they need before more of them reach their limit,” says Grewal.
