An off-duty Washington State police officer was stabbed to death in Las Vegas over the weekend after an altercation with a suspect he was arguing with last night over a dog, authorities said. Edmonts officer Tyler Stefins was on a bridge between two hotels in the Las Vegas Strip when he was stabbed by 58-year-old Freddie Allen on Saturday night, the Las Vegas Police Department said. Investigators said the couple had been arguing over an unspecified interaction with a dog the night before. On the night of the stabbing, another altercation broke out, police said. (Edmonts Police Department) “As they were exchanging words, Allen stabbed the victim once and tried to leave the area before being arrested by patrols,” Las Vegas police said. Officers who responded saw a knife in Allen’s hand as he ran down a flight of stairs before being arrested. Steffins was taken to hospital where he later died, police said. The Edmonts Police Department said Stephens had been in force since 2018 and was a Marine Corps veteran. He graduated from the Police Academy in 2019 and was at the top of his class. He then worked as a patrolman in day and night shifts, the department said. “This is a tragic loss for our service when our staff and the whole area are already in a state of mourning for other fallen officers. While we mourn with a heavy heart, the members of the peer support program are actively working with our staff,” Edmonts Police Chief Michelle Bennett said in a statement. “Tyler was a valuable member of our police family, whose contagious smile and contagious laughter made him dear to his peers,” he added. “We will miss him terribly, but we love the moments we spent with him. We remain committed to providing quality services to our community even in the most difficult times.” Steffins was survived by his wife and two young children. He was the second officer in the Washington area to be killed over the weekend. Washington Everett police officer Dan Rocha was shot and killed Friday while on duty, authorities said.
