This year, OnePlus has sharpened its vision of a legitimate flagship to challenge big brands and the result is a sophisticated, sleek device. It’s not just a cheaper flagship. is a real alternative for Samsung and Google, with its own identity. This does not mean that OnePlus has completely closed the gap between it and the big Android brands. The $ 899 price of the 10 Pro is more reasonable than last year’s $ 1,069 9 Pro. (There was a less expensive version, but it never came to the US.) But for the same price, there are good reasons to consider the Pixel 6 Pro or the Galaxy S22 Plus $ 999 versus the 10 Pro. OnePlus has little work to do to reach these competitors in the camera division, for one. And things are still unresolved with AT&T, so there is no support for this provider’s 5G network – only 4G.
Good stuff
Good price Fast charging with charger in the box Elegant construction and software The battery easily lasts a day
Bad things
No 5G at AT&T The camera lags behind the competition There is no official IP rating for the unlocked version
These are some important issues and prevent me from freely recommending the 10 Pro to anyone looking for a premium Android phone. But I’m encouraged by the direction the company is taking with the 10 Pro, and if this is indeed the new OnePlus, I like where it is headed. The 6.7-inch screen of the 10 Pro is slightly taller than the competition and offers a fast refresh rate of 120 Hz. With a 6.7-inch screen, the OnePlus 10 Pro is undoubtedly a great phone. It has LTPO OLED 1440p panel that is gently convex at the long edges. The 20: 9 aspect ratio is a hair taller than the screens of the S22 Plus and Pixel 6 Pro and matches the top refresh rate of 120 Hz. Next to it, I can see that the screen does not get as bright as the Galaxy S22 Plus when both are exposed to direct sunlight, but it is bright enough for comfortable use, even outdoors. The 10 Pro has an aluminum frame along with Gorilla Glass Victus at the front and Gorilla Glass 5 at the rear. The OnePlus pulled a page from the Samsung book and combined the metal camera housing on the side rails of the phone and it’s a good look. They may be playing someone else’s job, but at least he is one of the smartest kids in the class. OnePlus is doing this again where the mobile version – sold only through T-Mobile in the US – has an IP68 rating, but the unlocked version does not. OnePlus says there is no difference in build quality between the unlocked phone and the one on the T-Mobile shelves. Do whatever you want with this information. The life-size differences between the 10 Pro and any other large flagship Android phone are small – just a few millimeters in each direction, depending on the device you are comparing it to. That said, it looks a bit sleeker and easier to handle, in part because of this higher screen. It’s easier for me to handle than the Pixel 6 Pro, which I feel unnecessarily thick the more I use it. The 10 Pro’s on-screen optical fingerprint sensor is also fast and responsive, which is an advantage over the Pixel’s slow fingerprint scanner. All around, it’s a nice phone to carry and use, even for this little phone fan. The optical fingerprint sensor on the 10 Pro screen is fast and responsive The OnePlus 10 Pro uses Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line chipset this year, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. At launch, the only variant to be sold in North America will be the 128GB version with 8GB of RAM – OnePlus says memory 256 GB / 12 GB RAM will be available in the US at a later date. These specifications offer plenty of processing power for everyday tasks. I’ve noticed some very occasional stuttering with heavier tasks like the Genshin Impact, but for all intents and purposes, this is a fast device that offers flagship performance. Like any other flagship of 2022, the 10 Pro offers 5G connectivity. It is just 5G below 6 GHz, without the extremely fast millimeter wave (mmWave), which is not a problem for the vast majority of people. There is full support for T-Mobile 5G low and medium band from the release, but the story becomes complicated for the other major US providers. At launch, the 10 Pro will not be certified for use of Verizon’s 5G network, but OnePlus says it is working with the provider to acquire it. Most likely, support for Verizon 5G will arrive shortly after its release, as it did last year for the 9 and 9 Pro. But, like last year, there is no support for AT&T’s 5G network and there is no plan to add it at a later date. This means that the 10 Pro will be stuck in 4G, even when AT&T turns on a new mid-range range over the next two years, which is expected to make a big improvement in 5G speeds. The Galaxy S22 Plus and Pixel 6 Pro both offer full 5G support to all three major mobile companies without warnings, so this is a significant loss for the 10 Pro, especially if you are hoping to use it at AT&T. The large 5,000 mAh battery of the 10 Pro easily lasts a day with moderate use. The 10 Pro includes a large 5,000 mAh battery that, in my experience, easily helps me in a day of moderate (and even heavy) use. Using the Galaxy S22 Plus, I felt I had to watch my battery percentage and by the end of the day I fell into single digits. This is not the case with the 10 Pro, although I will confirm this claim by saying that since I am at Verizon, I could not try it on 5G. I turned on every battery drain setting I could think of, including high-performance phone, 1440p screen resolution, Always on Display, and the fastest available screen refresh rate. Even on a day I spent mostly off Wi-Fi, with some 4K video recording and blend navigation, I never ended up with uncomfortable low battery rates. At no point in trying this phone did I want it to charge faster There’s more good news on the front of the battery: the OnePlus 10 Pro supports fast charging and there’s a quick charger right in the package. You will definitely not get this with a Samsung or Google phone. In the US, the phone supports 65W charging, while other areas can charge up to 80W. OnePlus says this represents only two minutes difference in the total time it takes to charge the phone and realistically, 65 W is very fast – just over 30 minutes to bring the battery from 0 to 100%. At no point in trying this phone did I want it to charge faster. All of this means you probably won’t need to recharge your 10 Pro in the middle of the day unless you spend a lot of time playing games or streaming video. But if you need to recharge your batteries, you can do it quickly and without having to spend another $ 30- $ 50 to get a quick charger. The Shelf now has a search function throughout the system called Scout. The 10 Pro ships with the Android 12 version of OnePlus. It started hard when it was released for the 9 and 9 Pro, but the startup errors seem to have been resolved and I have not noticed any major issues. Shelf is back – this is a home screen where you can place your graphic and an inspirational message / daily confirmation / excerpt from a ’90s disaster movie. It now has the OnePlus search feature called Scout, which is similar to Spotlight on the iPhone. It’s not new, but this is the first time the feature has appeared on a phone sold in the US. It’s a great way to quickly find contacts, apps, and settings without scrolling through the menu pages. I’ve seen other device makers embrace the focus of Android 12 on customizing the interface, but OnePlus doesn’t seem to care much. With an Android 12 Pixel or Galaxy phone, you can choose a color palette inspired by your wallpaper to apply to system-wide controls and application icons. OnePlus offers several personalization options, but they are a bit more limited and all have a more “OnePlus” flavor. You can have the phone sample colors from a photo in your camera collection and apply them to a stylized, graphic wallpaper. It is neat, but an unmistakably different atmosphere – a little more adult and a little less playful. OnePlus has strengthened its support policy to provide three major operating system updates and four years of security updates for the 10 Pro. This is not as good as what Samsung and Google have to offer, but it is getting closer and closer. Google also promises three major operating system updates for its own devices, but has extended security support by up to five years. Samsung continues to offer the best support among Android device makers, with four years of operating system upgrades and five years of security updates. OnePlus does not match this, but it does take a step in the right direction. There are three rear cameras in the 10 Pro and they are generally the same as last year. There are three rear cameras in the 10 Pro. The fourth cut in the camera knob belongs to the flash, not to a silly monochrome sensor or anything like that, thank God. There have been no major updates to the rear camera hardware compared to the 9 Pro, but the selfie camera has been upgraded to twice the resolution.
