The Department of Health says there are 855 patients currently being treated for the virus in Ontario hospitals, up from 805 yesterday and 707 a week ago. Today marks the highest number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in a month.
Forty-nine percent of patients were admitted for COVID-19 and 51 percent were admitted for other reasons, but then tested positive for the virus, according to the ministry.
Of today’s hospitals, 165 patients are being treated in the intensive care unit, a decrease of two compared to yesterday, but eight more than last week.
Seventy-one percent of ICU patients were admitted for COVID-19 and 29 percent were admitted for other reasons, but were positive for the virus.
The ministry reported nine more deaths related to the virus today, with seven occurring last month and two more than a month ago.
As of March 2020, the county says there have been 12,460 deaths from COVID-19.
Ontario laboratories have processed 16,000 tests in the last 24 hours, resulting in a 17.1% positivity rate, up from 13.5 percent this time a week ago, according to the ministry.
The county has confirmed another 3,233 cases today, but health officials say it is an understatement due to limited testing.
Among the most recent cases, 1,176 of the subjects have received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine, 864 have received two doses, 441 have been partially vaccinated and 152 have an unknown vaccination status.
To date, more than 89 percent of Ontario residents aged five and over have received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 86 percent have received two doses, and 51 percent have received three doses.
The numbers used in this story are in the Ontario Department of Health’s Daily Epidemiological Summary COVID-19. The number of cases for any city or region may differ slightly from that reported by the province, as local units report data at different times.
