A senior government source familiar with the plan told CBC News on Sunday that the gas tax would be reduced by 5.7 cents per liter and the fuel tax by 5.3 cents per liter. The source spoke to CBC News on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak in public. The cuts will take effect on July 1 over a six-month period and are part of the Ford government’s plan to keep spending on Ontario families and businesses low. The news was first reported by CP24 and CityNews. The reduction will be based on the announcement of the provincial government in 2018 to reduce gas tax prices by 4.3 cents per liter. Combined with the savings from proposed legislation by the Ford government, the reduction in provincial taxes and fees on gas will be a total of 10 cents per liter. This will be the first time Ontario has cut its gas tax in more than 30 years.
