The other driver was taken to Sault Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the accident continues. The full text of the OPP Communication is as follows: RYAN TOWNSHIP – March 27, 2022 at about 8 pm, members from Sault Ste. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marie Detachment, Sault Ste Marie Paramedic Services and Batchawana Fire Rescue responded to a car-and-SUV collision on Highway 17 at Sawpit Bay in Ryan Township (north of Pancake Provincial Park). The investigation found that a car was traveling south on Highway 17 and crossed the main line colliding head-on with an SUV heading north. The sole passenger / driver of the car, Clovis Vallieres, 25, of Hearst, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was injured non-life-threateningly and was taken to the local hospital in Sault Ste. Mary. The investigation is ongoing with the Northeast Regional Traffic Management and Enforcement Team (TIME) and the Collision Technical Investigators (TCI). Highway 17 closed in both directions from Batchawana Bay to Wawa and reopened fully at 3:08 a.m. on March 28, 2022.
