Two people were nailed under the car and died at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 2 am local time, while two others died after being taken to hospital, police said. Two other people were also treated for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was also transported by ambulance to the hospital, according to police. “No arrests have been made so far; however, the Salem Police Traffic Team is actively investigating the circumstances and believes alcohol may have contributed,” police said in a statement. Police did not release the names of the victims, pending notifications from relatives. Police helped several uninjured campers collect their belongings and “assisted a shelter” after the crash, police said. Three people were taken to a local hotel, according to the announcement, with the exact number of people and tents in the camp unknown. “We also contacted the homeless defense partners in the city of Salem in an effort to connect members of our unprotected community with the necessary resources as a result of this tragedy,” the statement said.
