The first witness to testify was Laura’s tearful husband, Oliver. He described how his wife worked as a pediatric nurse at Treliske after returning to Padstow from Bristol. He said she was “very caring”, “very strong” and always surprised him, adding “she was a very happy and fun person”. Setting the stage, Mr Smallwood agreed with Mr Cox that Padstow Obby Oss was an “integral part of Padstow’s fabric” and a long tradition that welcomed the spring. They talked about how two people pass in the streets, one blue and one red with the spectators being divided into two lines according to their color. Obby Oss takes place every May Day in Padstow Mr Smallwood described how he had been in telephone contact with his wife all day while working as a site manager at a pub. He said during interrogation that it was around 7 p.m. was informed that Laura had been hit by the oss and that she had been knocked out. However, he stated that he was initially told he was OK. Mr. Smallwood recalled walking to Stile Field and seeing Laura lying on the ground. She went with her to the Air Ambulance in Deriford but tragically, despite initial optimism, her condition worsened over the course of a few days and she died on May 4, 2019. The next to give information was Laura’s girlfriend, the priest Kirsten Norfolk. She talked about how she, Laura and others were sharing a few bottles of wine before heading to Padstow Square to watch the oss celebrations. Ms Norfolk said he was very busy and Laura got into an argument with Chelsea Powell and a man who was with Ms Powell. The controversy erupted when Mrs. Powell hit Laura and left a mark. Ms Norfolk said “it ended as fast as it started” and everyone laughed at it and kept going. Laura Smallwood Ms Norfolk said she arranged to meet Laura a little later at Stile Field. He said: “I tried to call her and there was no answer. I was told that Laura was crying and that she had been hit by the shell. Several people were with her, so I thought it would be okay. People are being hit by oss all the time, so we guess that would be fine. “I could see something in the background where we left Laura and ran back and I could only watch her being taken by the medical staff for treatment. I did not see her being beaten in the first incident or by the oss. ” Another witness, Michael Dennick, said he was also present when the altercation took place and that he heard a slap and saw Laura’s head go back and her sunglasses flying, leaving a mark. Laura’s cousin, Rosie Howells, made a similar account. He said Laura was involved in the altercation after a child was hit in the face. He said Ms Powell told Laura she should not get involved, with Laura then trying to resolve the situation. Ms Howells said they were divorced and that was the end of it. He added that the teams then disbanded and laughed with Laura looking fine. Red and Blue Oss Meet at Maypole Dance (Image: Adrian Jasper) Jack Powell, Mrs. Powell’s friend, said he did not remember much about the day because of his alcohol consumption and the time he spent there, but said he did remember crushing one of the crowd that led to a quarrel between Laura and Mrs. Powell. He talked about exchanging words before Mrs. Powell hit Laura in the face. Giving evidence late in the morning on the first day of the investigation, Ms. Powell said she was in the social club for most of the day before going to town for a while. She recalled that the streets were crowded and Mr. Jones was chasing her after an argument between her and her brother that made them leave the social club. He said: “I remember walking in the city and Jack was not there. I saw him arguing with someone, so I went and talked to that person. Laura grabbed me by the arm and pushed her in the face and I told her something like “do not touch me”. The investigation then continued to hear evidence of Laura’s beating by oss. Sian Howells said she first saw Laura at 6:10 p.m., but she was very crazy and angry that she was completely out of character. Ms Howells said: “I saw Laura again at 7pm at Chapel Stile, there was a lot of people and the procession was huge. The person at oss was exchanged and I watched the transition. Suddenly the oss moved backwards, which was very unusual and now I know it was due to a fall. “Laura had her back to the oss. One thing we are always taught is not to have your back to oss and Laura would know that. I thought it was very unusual and he would know better. I saw what was going to happen but there was nothing I could do. I saw the ossicle hit her and I thought it would hurt. “It seemed strange to me that he did not recognize that he was hit by the oss. “I found her behavior that day completely out of character.” Another friend talked about how things happened so quickly, but after being hit by the oss, Laura said it hurt a little, but she was able to stay upright. A little while later Laura grabbed her friend’s arm and said she had to go home because of a dizziness. Shortly afterwards, medical help was sought. The investigation also heard that when she was hit by oss, Laura was in shape and well from the previous incident involving Ms. Powell.
