Video shared on social media appeared to show travelers walking along the main service tunnel after their train broke down en route to France on Tuesday afternoon. A spokesman for Eurotunnel Le Shuttle said: “A train has broken down in the tunnel and we are in the process of transferring customers to a separate passenger coach through the service tunnel to return to Folkestone Terminal. “We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.” According to information, the passengers had to leave their vehicles and were escorted on foot. The Eurotunnel is a 31-mile rail tunnel connecting Folkestone in Kent to Coquelles in northern France. It is the third longest railway tunnel in the world and has the longest underwater section of any other tunnel in the world. Tuesday’s incident follows a similar incident in April when a train broke down in the tunnel at the start of the first school holidays after the lifting of the COVID-19 travel rules. Eurotunnel identified a safety issue with a freight-only train which had to be repaired inside the tunnel before being moved back to Kent, blocking one of the two tunnels.
