Environment and Climate Change Canada said conditions Sunday afternoon were favorable for a strong storm to develop over the islands of Montreal and Laval and elsewhere in southern Quebec, warning of heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms.
By early evening, large areas of the province were without power as storms lashed the province. By evening, tens of thousands of residents were still in the dark.
“Large hail may damage property and cause injury,” the ECCC says in its watch. “Strong gusts of wind can blow loose objects, damage flimsy buildings, snap branches from trees and overturn large vehicles. Water-related activities can be dangerous due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.”
The temperature is forecast to stay in the mid 20s, but it will feel higher in the 30s with the humidex. Monday and Tuesday are also expected to be wet.
