The start date is set by the sight of the first faint crescent of the new moon, and this year officials have predicted that Ramadan will begin on either Saturday, April 2, or Sunday, April 3.
The Green Lane Masjid and Community Center (GLMCC) in Birmingham’s Small Heath – host of Europe’s largest Eid celebrations at the end of Ramadan – is in line with Saudi Arabia’s announcements. Others are looking for verified moon views in their own country.
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is characterized by fasting from early in the morning until sunset every day, as observers turn their focus to prayer and spiritual contemplation.
