The two Atlanta police officers involved in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks will not face criminal charges … according to the special prosecutor in the case. At a press conference Tuesday, Special Prosecutor Pete Skandalakis announced that he is no longer pursuing criminal charges against officers Garrett Rolfe and Devin Brosnan. Remember… Brooks was fatally shot in June 2020 after police tried to arrest him in the parking lot of a Wendy’s, sparking protests that left the fast food restaurant burning to the ground. Officers say Brooks fell asleep in the Wendy’s line and when police responded, he fought with officers, grabbing an officer’s Taser and trying to run away. Brooks was shot to death after officers say he pointed a Taser at Rolfe’s head, fired once and disappeared. Now, prosecutors say a review of the case finds that Rolfe and Brosnan acted within Georgia law, concluding that the use of deadly force was reasonable. Skandalakis also says he doesn’t believe the shootings had anything to do with the race … framing the shootings as very different from the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd.
