A rape investigation began Monday after a 63-year-old woman told police she was attacked in Rising Sun Country Park in Wallsend. Now, two days after the daytime attack, police are searching the popular beauty spot for clues that could lead them to the perpetrator.
Special search teams can be seen in the park, while uniformed and cavalry police patrol its many paths and bridles. Read more: Visitors to Rising Sun Country Park talk of shock after 63-year-old raped in broad daylight t The head of the service, Shelley Hudson, who leads the Northumbria police investigation, said: “Incidents of this kind are rare in this area, but when they do occur, we are committed to using every tactic at our disposal to we bring the offenders to justice. “There will continue to be an increased police presence in the area as we conduct our investigations and we would ask anyone with concerns to speak to one of our officers.” Point Search Groups (Image: Newcastle Chronicle) Earlier in the day, Northumbria police released a description of the man they were looking for. Described as white, in his late 20s to early 30s, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, and of medium build. He spoke in a northeastern accent and at the time of the attack was shaved and probably wore a dark or gray hood and trousers. The head of the Insp service, Hudson, added: “I want to commend the bravery of the victim at this extremely difficult time. We continue to support it in any way we can and our priority is to find the perpetrator. “The victim was able to give us a description with courage and we hope that this, along with local knowledge, can provide vital information that could help us locate the perpetrator.” Police on horseback patrolling Rising Sun Country Park (Image: Newcastle Chronicle) Police were called to the park around 16:10 on Monday, after the woman was found in a distressed condition. When police arrived, the 63-year-old woman said she had been raped by an unknown man near the park’s Pit Heap area. Rising Sun Park, run by the North Tyneside Council, is popular with walkers, cyclists and families. And detectives are now urging anyone with information to get in touch. Det Insp Hudson added: “We have had teams working tirelessly since Monday on this investigation and are now appealing to those who regularly use the park or were in the area at the time to assist with our investigation.
